Football in Cyprus
If there is one thing Cypriots can’t live without besides their national food 'souvlaki' - its football.
Tennis too to some extent now ever since Marcos Baghdatis brought new found fame to it. But tennis will never make it to that special place in a Cypriot’s heart and life as football.
The country is peppered with 5-a-side football pitches all over. It would be rare that a Cypriot boy has reached adolescence without ever having had a serious go at the game. They all play or have played or at the very least are very serious supporters of one team or the other. Almost every Cypriot supports one club or the other.
Pubs are packed and noisy on football nights and if there aren’t any live matches to watch you’ll see most Cypriots sitting on the veranda, bare-chested with their can of beer and whatever football action they can catch from around the world on their TV.
