Top Restaurants in Cyprus

Cyprus is known for its very special local cuisine served at many tavernas. But there are plenty of great pubs and coffee shops for all hours of the day. In the traditional Cypriot taverns you can enjoy bouzouki and live music while you dine. Practically all international cuisines are available all over the island and its a delight for sea food lovers but you must always look for the local food to enjoy the true gifts of this island. Places like Zygi serve huge range of fresh fish and sea food meze in several restaurants lined across the coast. Most local taverns are family run, cosy places serving local delicacies. In the last few years some fine dining restaurants have also sprung up and my personal favorites are the Lebanese and Indian restaurants of Cyprus.

Following places are our family favorites :

La Mer Restaurant and Fish Tavern, Limassol
This midsize, cosy restaurant on the Limassol sea-front seems to live upto its name - beautiful location next to the beach and serving excellent seafood meze with huge range of starters and dips. The food is top quality and service prompt. The place is bit cramped but food makes up for it. Grilled fish is simply superb.
Most customers appear die-hard loyalists who will choose it again and again for any occasion or just to enjoy a meal out with family and friends. It not advisable to walk into La Mer without a reservation. Also suitable for social and semi-formal occasions. There is a lot of variety for vegetarians (for those who don’t even eat fish and chicken). T: 25.356095

Chesters Bar and Restaurant, Limassol
Chesters is one of the most friendly places to wine and dine. The beers are great, food even greater and atmosphere simply superb. You can watch your favourite football or cricket matches or play scrabble or chess (which you will need to carry). Their beer festivals are most sought after events in town. They also pride themselves on the cleanest, most modern kitchen in town. Zen (www.zenroom.biz), their sushi bar nextdoor, serves not only the best Japanese cuisine on the island but vies with best sushi restaurants around the world.

Psilo Dendron (Trout Farm), Platres
Whether you have just done a trek to Kaledonia falls or driving down from Troodos or are just driving in for a weekend lunch of grilled trout, this family place just before Platres is a delightful experience. With the rivulet flowing down by its side and the walnut trees in the open yard, an afternoon here over fresh trout – straight from the adjoining farm – is an unforgettable experience and you want to come here every day.

Maryland at the Mill, Kakopetria
This is another great place for fresh trout – never take chance to go there without a reservation. The yellow sauce, served with the fish, is a speciality and closely guarded secret of the family. It is delight to eat this delicious food served on the terrace of this restored 17th century flour mill listening to the stream of running water. A walk along the river is a must after the meal. They do not close between lunch and dinner so you can plan a great day out to his beautiful hill resort.

Lofou Tavern, Lofou

Owner Costas Violaris started this agro tourism venture. Costas renovated this 1794 family stone house in 1994 and created one of the best Greek Taverns on the island. If you want a real genuine Cypus cuisine and house wine to go with it, its worth a 45 minute drive from Limassol and you can spice it up with a walk through the village’s narrow streets and stone houses. Costas also plays bouzouki and sings. It’s a place frequented by VIPs including foreign diplomats. If you warn them about your special food needs, Costas and his family make sure to serve a platter of dishes customised only for you.

Blue Island Restaurant, Limassol
A sure favourite with Cypriots is Blue Island Restaurant in Limassol on the seafront. Blue Island is more famous for its steaks, it offers a variety of dishes including sea food. You can also book your table on-line.

The management prides itself in “ ...a food production and service system to provide safe, consistent, quality food that has been prepared and cooked under the strict food and hygiene regulations… "

Akakiko Japanese Restaurant, Nicosia & Limassol

Above Mondo Café on Arch. Makarios III Ave. Nicosia, is the local franchise of the Austrian Japanese restaurant chain - Akakiko. Nice décor and pleasant staff provide a pleasant experience in fine dinning. It offers one of the best sushi and maki rolls in Cyprus.

The Akakiko Limassol restaurant is situated in Apollonia Beach Hotel.
