The championship got off to a flying start today in Nicosia. It was a very solemn atmosphere worthy of a chess tournament and the group of participants was very mixed. Of the 50 contestents, there are two female and 4 children.

The Cyprus National Chess Championship 2009 is being held from January 10th to February 21st, 2009.

There will be 13 rounds played over weekends in Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca. The 1st round takes place from 3.30 PM on 10th January at Classic Hotel in Nicosia. 50 contestants, including children, are taking part in this year’s Cyprus Open Tournament.

Pairing for 1st round

The championship is organized by the Cyprus Chess Federation every year to select the national champion. The top ranking players represent Cyprus at various international chess events.

The defending champion for 2008 is Mr. Vassilis Aristotelous.

Sponsor of the event is Deloitte, Cyprus.
