Amateur theatre in Cyprus

No-one can say that there is no atmosphere here for amateur theatre. Every few weeks or so, when the banners go up for the next performance, tens of people rush to buy tickets and the chances are that someone they know or are related to has some role in the performance.

The cast and directors are anything from pupils, school staff and parents to dance teachers and hairdressers. The whole point is for their creative satisfaction and for spectators, its intellectual indulgence or sometimes just a nice evening out.

People do things ranging from puppet shows and pantomimes to Shakespeares. There is always a full house for these performances. There are shows in the historical, open air theatres like the curium amphitheatre near Limassol and in the modern theatres in all the cities.

The rehearsals are done in spare time and are done in a relaxed , enjoyable atmosphere, people are proud to be part of something so popular and looked-forward-to. When the shows are all done it’s a night out for the senior cast down at the pub, and for the juniors a meal at McDonalds together.
You will find little girls, of 4 or 5years at times, as dancers, or a granny coming on as the wicked witch!
Tourists seldom leave Cyprus without having spent an evening in the theatre, there is something to satisfy everyone’s taste - guaranteed.
